Best Microfibre Travel Towel Reviews

6th February, 2022

Everyone should own a travel towel! They are one of the most versatile and essential items to take on a family adventure holiday. Whether it be long term travelling, backpacking, camping, a weekend away, a day trip out or even just to use at your local gym. We always carry a few when we go away as they come in so handy. We’ve used them as towels, blankets, mosquito barriers, beach mats, sunshades and even to cover up in temples. Travel towels are lightweight, fold up small, and most importantly dry quickly. It’s never good to be carrying around a big, heavy, wet towel!

Types of Travel Towel

There are several different types of travel towel available: microfibre, towelling, cotton, bamboo and many more. Microfibre travel towels are the ones we use. They are soft, lightweight, small when folded, quick drying and many have antibacterial/odour eliminating properties. Most travel towels come with a handy clip or loop for hanging them up to dry, and a water resistant carry pouch to keep damp towels from soaking the rest of your luggage.

We have used a few different types of travel towels over the years. Some of them didn’t quite last the distance but a few are still going strong after 15+ years! See below for a list of the ones we’ve tried, tested and would happily recommend!

We did NOT receive any of these products for free and are NOT being paid to promote them. We are just sharing information and our experiences with products, that we have actually used, in the hope that it might help others. This website does, however, have affiliate links to the products that earn us a small commission. If you click them it will help fund this website (and hopefully our family’s travel habit!)

Ecodept Microfibre Towel

This towel is a new purchase for us. We bought the desert sand coloured one before our latest adventure and are very pleased with it. It is one of the softest microfibre towels that we’ve ever used and even comes with a free little pocket towel.

  • Antibacterial properties
  • Comes in 3 colours: desert sand (orange), foliage green and marine blue
  • Lightweight 230g
  • Fast drying
  • Large towel size is 132cm x 81cm
  • One of the softest towels we’ve used
  • Comes with a free little pocket travel towel
  • Carry pouch included

The Little Bodhi Microfibre Travel Towel

This is another new purchase for us, bought before our latest trip away. The large sized towel is slightly bigger than the ECOdept towel when unfolded and folded, but it comes in some great colours and absorbs a lot of water. It would be hard to choose between them.

  • Comes in 6 colours: blue, green, grey, purple, pink and turquoise
  • 3 sizes: medium (100cm x 50cm), large (150cm x 80cm) and extra large (180cm x 90cm)
  • Fast drying
  • Lightweight. The large towel weighs in at 248g (weighed on our kitchen scales)
  • Antibacterial/odour eliminating properties
  • Carry pouch included

Mountain Warehouse Microfibre Travel Towel

We have had several of these towels over the years and they are really hard wearing and good value for money! They are our choice of travel towels for kids as they wash up well too. We bought the medium sized towels for the kids. They come with an elasticated hanging loop which doubles up as a tie to keep the towel rolled up neatly. Some of larger sizes come with their own carry bag too.

  • Antibacterial properties
  • Comes in 5 colours: cobalt, purple, pink, khaki and teal
  • Medium (120cm x 60cm), Large (130 x 70cm), Giant (150cm x 85cm)
  • Medium size weighs 114g (according to our kitchen scales)
  • Giant size weighs 300g (according to Mountain Warehouse)
  • You can also get a small 40cm x 40cm clip on version

Sea to Summit Microfibre Pocket Towel

This towel is by far the lightest, thinnest and smallest folded size of all the travel towels listed here. It also dries quicker than any other travel towel I’ve ever owned. For that reason it’s one of my firm favourites. I also love it’s soft, silky feel, although some of you may prefer the traditional fluffier microfibre towel feel. This towel has been round the world with me and back several times, and still has plenty of life left in it after 12 years.

  • Extremely lightweight around 125g
  • Large size: 110cm x 60cm
  • Soft and silky feel
  • Thinner than most microfibre travel towels
  • Folds up very small
  • Super fast drying time
  • Not as absorbent as microfibre but dries faster
  • Hard wearing – mine is still going strong after 12 years
  • Carry pouch included
